Still have a question? Ask usClean Truck Check, also called the Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance program (HD I/M), is a California Air Resources Board program that makes sure heavy-duty diesel and alternative-fuel vehicles keep their emissions systems working. Most non-gasoline vehicles over 14,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating that operate in California are subject, including trucks registered in other states.
CTC-VIS is the Clean Truck Check Vehicle Inspection System, the online portal CARB uses to track every vehicle. Your registration, annual compliance fee, and passing test results all live in your CTC-VIS account, and each vehicle's testing deadline is listed there under the Testing Details tab. When we finish a passing test, we submit it directly into CTC-VIS for you.
It depends on your engine. Trucks with on-board diagnostics (2013 and newer diesel, 2018 and newer alternative fuel) get an OBD data scan using a CARB-certified device. Older diesels (2012 and older) get a snap-idle smoke opacity test plus a visual inspection of the emissions control equipment. Older alternative-fuel vehicles (2017 and older) get the visual inspection only. We run the correct test for your vehicle and report the result.
Most subject vehicles need a passing test twice a year. California-registered motorhomes and qualifying agricultural vehicles test once a year. Beginning in October 2027, OBD-equipped vehicles will be required to report four times a year. Your exact deadline is always shown in your CTC-VIS account.
Yes. CARB charges an annual compliance fee per vehicle, adjusted each year to the California Consumer Price Index. For 2026 the fee is $32.13 per vehicle. That fee is separate from testing and is paid to CARB through CTC-VIS. Confirm the current amount with CARB before you file.
Have your vehicle and engine details ready: the VIN, license plate, gross vehicle weight rating, engine make and model year, and current DMV registration. It helps to have your CTC-VIS account set up so we can submit results right away. If you are not registered yet, we can walk you through it during the visit.
A vehicle that misses its compliance deadline can be blocked from DMV registration renewal and flagged through roadside and weigh-station enforcement. If your truck does not pass, we tell you exactly what needs attention so you can repair and retest quickly.
Yes. If your truck is registered outside California but operates in the state, it is subject to Clean Truck Check. We can test it while you are working in the Inland Empire or San Diego area.
Send your details and we will get you scheduled. Have a quick question first? That is fine too.
